Elena of Avalor: Flight of the Jacquins

Designer: Prospero Hall

If someone where to ask me, “What is the best game you worked on, that barely anyone has played?” I would answer “Elena of Avalor: Flight of the Jacquins.” Having done a number of Disney Princess games in the past, the studio really wanted to do something different with this game, to set it apart. So, we made this an adventure game, with unique gameplay that allowed families to increase the complexity of the game, as their kids grew up with it. From the game play to the art to the charming Jacquin movers, everything about this game is great. Heck, it’s even bilingual. Unfortunately, the show never really caught on, and the game aisle moved away from licensed games for younger kids, so it never really found it’s audience. Still, I stand by it.

As a Product Designer on this game, my contributions included:

  • Assisting in developing the 3-tiered game complexity system, that “grows up” with younger players.

  • Designing the color scheme and iconography system.

  • Graphic design on the game components, including player boards, tokens, dice and cards.

  • Engineering 3D paperboard castle.

  • Working with an illustrator to develop gameboard layout, including reversible game board tiles and extreme aerial perspective.

  • Working with 3D artist to create Jacquin movers.
